Being Changed for the Worse by Coding

This is a warning.

I did CS50. It has turned me into my mom, in a bad way. I just can’t stop organizing things. I have to delete abbreviations and replace them with full-length words. My clothes now have to be folded. My table aligned with the wall. My folders nested inside other folders (inside even smaller folders). The messy self that I pride myself in being is gone.

Perhaps this is what learning is all about. Not earning the concrete skill but rather embodying the way of life of a field of work. But change is perilous. You may just become the person that you’ve always despised. I certainly have.

I guess the lesson here is that if you want to become a certain type of person, do what they do. But there’ll be unintended consequences—they might be ugly.
